“  The River Shannon has historically overflowed its banks at numerous locations across the town including along the River Al.

As part of the Shannon Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study, Athlone was modelled as an Area for Further Assessment (AFA) and in this regard a specific Option Appraisal Report for Athlone was produced. Flood Cell 7 River Al (Creggan) will require an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) in accordance with the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, as amended.

The project is now being progressed to the design and planning stages. The following environmental stages form an integral part of this process:

  • Stage I – Constraints Study & Screening for Appropriate Assessment,
  • Stage II – Environmental Assessment & Appropriate Assessment,
  • Stage III – Environmental Impact Statement and Natura Impact Statement, and
  • Stage IV – Statutory Planning Process.

In addition, Westmeath County Council are holding a Public Consultation Event on Thursday 5th December 2019 at the Athlone Municipal District, Civic Centre, Church Street, Athlone, between 5pm – 8pm, if you wish to attend. “
