Groundworks for the construction of a flood defence wall on The Strand, Athlone are being archaeologically monitored by archaeologists from Co. Clare based consultancy TVAS (Ireland) Ltd as part of the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme undertaken by the OPW in conjunction with Westmeath County Council.

Environmental Constraints and Options Assessment of the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme – Flood Cell 7 River Al (Creggan), Co. Westmeath. Public Information Evening Venue: Athlone Civic Centre, Church Street, Athlone, N37 P2T5 Date: Thursday 5th December 2019 Time: 5pm – 8pm.
The River Shannon has historically overflowed its banks at numerous locations across the town including along the River Al.
As part of the Shannon Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study, Athlone was modelled as an Area for Further Assessment (AFA) and in this regard a specific Option Appraisal Report for Athlone was produced. Flood Cell 7 River Al (Creggan) will require an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) in accordance with the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, as amended.
The project is now being progressed to the design and planning stages. The following environmental stages form an integral part of this process:
